Guided Over Night hikes:

All rates quoted are in ZAR and per person per trip, based on a group size of 1-2 people and should only be used as a guide line. Inquire about group rates and available discounts as the needs and requirements of each group is different.

Giants Castle Loop

This is a 3 day & 2 nights round trip and you will need a fair level of fitness to complete the trip and the ability to carry a full back pack and tent.

Day 1: From Giants Castle camp we ascend to contour path level and walk to Bannerman Hut for first night;

Day 2: Ascend Bannerman Pass and sleep in tents on the escarpment close to a reliable water source;

Day 3 Descend via Langalibalele Pass and return to Giants Castle main camp.

Hiking Gear

Aasvoel Krantz Cave

This is an easy overnight hike suitable for the whole family or for first time hikers wanting to experience hiking.  This cave has a wonderful pool and waterfall to swim in and spacious enough for the maximum of 12 people. This site is ideal for birding and trout fishing is available but need to be booked beforehand.

Day 1: Walk from car park to Aasvoel Krantz Cave where we will sleep the night in the cave.

Day 2: After breakfast we will take s leisure stroll back to the car park.

Bannerman Hut

This is an easy 2 day, 1 night hike, and is suitable for the whole family and novice hikers alike. The walk stats and end at Giant Castle with accommodation available for those that want to stay a bit longer in our beautiful Drakensberg. Bannerman Hut is a basic mountain hut that can sleep maximum 8 people and is located on a spur below Bannerman Pass with great views of Bannerman Face and Gypaetus Point towering over you.

Day 1: The walk starts at the Giants Castle main camp and follows the path up the valley to the contour path, and from here an easy walk to the hut for our first night.

Day 2: After breakfast we will take a slow walk back to the vehicles.

Injasuthi 2 Caves Hike

This is moderate to easy 3 day and 2 night trip and a fair level of fitness is advisable and you need to be able to carry a backpack with all your equipment. This trip can also be customized to be only an overnight tip to any of the caves.  At each cave there is enough time to explore and relax with close up views of the high berg. Please note that the caves is popular and need to be booked in advance beforehand.

Day 1: Walk from the car park to Lower Injasuthi Cave were we will be spending our first night, there is a few water crossings that need to be navigated s be prepared to get a bit wet if need be.  There is a nice pool to swim in close to the cave and lots of rocks to sun yourself on.

Day 2: After breakfast we walk back the same route and turn off to Marble Baths Cave for our last night. Marble Baths is known for its natural water slid and ideal place to spend time swimming and relaxing while the high berg towers over you.

Cathedral Peak Contour Path

This is moderate to easy 3 day and 2 night trip and a fair level of fitness is advisable and you need to be able to carry a backpack with all your equipment including a tent.  At each camp site we will be camping close to water and swimming is on the cards especially in summer. We will be close to the high berg with the peaks towering over us giving you lots of photo opportunities of most of the major peaks in the area.

Day 1: Starting at the car park we ascend the lower berg to reach the contour path before making our way down to Tseketseke camp site where we will camp in tents for our first night.

Day 2: From Tseketseke we pick up the trail and contour round to our next camp site at Mlambonja Pass where we will camp for our last night.

Day 3: this is a longish day as we continue with the contour path and walk down One Tree Hill before heading back to the car park.

This route can be made customized by adding a day or changed to sleep one night in Xeni Cave – contact us for your needs.

Mafadi Peak

This is a difficult 5 day 4 night or 4 day 3 night hike, a fair level of fitness is required and although not a true expedition ,you will need to be well prepared for all kinds of weather possibilities. Porter hire is available at an extra cost.

Madafi Peak is the highest point on South Africa at 3450masl, but don’t be fooled by its looks as you will have to work hard for the feeling of being on top of the world with a 360 degree views all around you.

Please note that there are a few variations available so enquire with us about what will suit you best.

Day 1: The walk starts from the Injasuthi car park and after crossing the Injasuthi River it’s a easy walk to the base of Heart Break Hill. Once on top of the Little Berg we spent our first night at Centenary Hut sleeping in tents. The old hut is disuse at present and very derelict.

Day 2: After breakfast we walk via the contour pat the base of Judges Pass were we will ascend the pass and make our way to our camp site close to a reliable stream were we will pictch our tents for the night.

Day 3: After packing up camp we will start the ascend to the top of Mafadi that lay’s in fromt of us up the valley. All though not that steep, it will still give you a good cardio work out. Once on the summit and photo shoot, we will make our way back down to our camp site for the night at the base of Leslies Pass.

Day 4: Don’t be fooled that day 4 is going to be easy going down, the map might only say 6km but going down is very taxing on the knees and once we reach the bottom of the pass we will make our way down stream to the iconic Marble Baths for our last night. The swim in the natural slide is so refreshing that you would have forgotten about all the struggles in no time at all.

Day 5: Our last day is a stroll compared to what you have just accomplished and joining up with the route we used on day one we will reach the Injasuthi River for our last time and a quick swim is in quite order before continuing to the car park.

Champagne Castle Peak

This is a 3 day & 2 nights hike in the iconic Cathkin Peak/Monks Cowl part of the Drakensberg and ascending Grays Pass to reach the top of the escarpment is quite strenuous and you will need a fair level of fitness to complete the trip and the ability to carry a full back pack and tent. Champagne Castle 3377m is the 3rd highest peak in South Africa and from the summit you can see both Mafadi 3451m and Injasuthi Dome 3410m in the distance. From the top of the pass you will enjoy close-up views of Cathkin and Monks Cowl.  

Day 1: The walk starts from the Monks Cowl office and after a heart racing climb early on and passing by Crystal Falls, The Sphinx and then Breakfast Stream before reaching Blindmans Conner. From here the contour path zigzags in and out the valleys before reaching Hlathikulu Neck and from here we start the head up into the Emhlwazini Valley to our camp for the night at Keith Bush Camp were we will sleep in tents;

Day 2: After packing up camp and breakfast we will ascend Grays Pass and after a rest break at the Inkosazana Stream before contouring up to the summit of Champagne Castle. After spending some time on the summit we will make our way back to the Inkosazana Stream where we will camping in tents for our second night;

Day 3: This is the toughest and longest day of the trip as we will descend the pass and walk all the way back down to the car park. (There is other options available like adding a day or sleeping back down at Keith Bush Camp, please discuss different issues with us).

Contour Path Hikes

There is a number of hikes available that varies from 3 to 5 days in length. Some start and finishes in the same area where others will start in one place and finishes in a different area.  All thought we do not enter into the High Berg, the contour path should not be underestimated and a fair level of fitness is still required to enjoy hiking in the Low Berg. The contour path takes you close to the High Berg and will give you excellent views of the peaks towering over you as you pass by. Camp sites is usually close to water and in summer the streams will be an ideal place to swim and cool off in. In some cases we might overnight in caves but is subject to availability.

Cleft Peak

This is a 3 day & 2 nights hike for the fit and energetic hikers that want to stand on top of Cleft Peak. This is quite strenuous hike and you will need a fair level of fitness to complete the trip and the ability to carry a full back pack and tent. The way to the top of the escarpment is via the iconic Camel and Organ Pipes Pass as one option and a second is via the old fire lookout – how ever this is a bit longer and might add a day into the trip as you first have to ascend Mikes Pass. We will descend via Tseketseke and walk down in the shadow of the Colum and the Plum and camp at the camp site at the foot of the pass

Day 1: The first day is one of the longest and toughest days of the whole trip and will test the resolve of every person. The trail start at the Cathedral Peak car park and we ascend the escarpment via Ribbon Falls and then slowly tackle the Camel that will lead up to Windy Gape and then on into Organ Pipes Pass and eventually onto the escarpment. There are a number of campsites next to water and after finding a suitable one we will pitch our tents for the first night.

Day 2: Cleft Peak is not a walk in the park and at 3722masl is not the highest in the Drakensberg but will still give you a magnificent view over KZN. After summiting the path leads down to Tseketseke Pass and slowly we will make our way down to the bottom of the pass, this is not going to be easy as the downhill will be hard on your knees. Once on the bottom the river will be an ideal place to cool off in and relaxing for the tired feet;

Day 3: On our last day we walk out the Tseketseke valley with our path taking us in the shadow of the Camel towering over the path and one last look at the mighty Barrier of Spears towering above us. The route back will take us past Ribbon Falls and time permitting is an ideal stop over for a quick swim before continuing on to the car park.
